Important offshore countries

The seven most important offshore countries are increasingly behind expansion of farshore capacity. Many nations are readying themselves for their entry into commercial offshore wind energy usage. Japan, South Korea and the US are gaining initial experience with smaller installations. Norway, USA, Canada, Brazil and India are planning to develop offshore projects in coming years.

The Offshore wind capacity conecentrates more on farshore rather than on nearshore. Farshore means offshore locations at least 3 sea miles (5.5 km) from the shore (see §5 Section 36 REA). A nearshore location is accordingly less than 5.5 km from the shore.
