Age Structure

By the end of 2018, 4600 of the wind turbines installed in Germany had exceeded the assumed service life of 20 years. This corresponds to around 15.4 percent of the total installed capacity, but only 4.1 percent of the rated output (average 473 kW). However, as no complete data on the dismantling of wind turbines is available by August 2014, the figures mentioned tend to be too high for wind turbines still in operation. The expected dismantling of these turbines therefore has only a very minor influence on the installed wind capacity. Rather, the locations of these plants can be used by repowering measures to erect newer and more powerful plants, provided that the current planning specifications permit this at the locations.
